Twenty five years ago, cosmetologist Terry Dykshorn watched a group of six young musicians perform at the Top of the Hilton in Sioux City, IA. She liked their music, but thought their aesthetic appeal could be improved.  She wrote a quick message on a paper napkin suggesting a professional makeover. The six member band “Aspen” accepted  the offer, and with the help of other stylists at Terry’s  salon, the band got a new look, and the local newspaper got a great story.  Surprisingly, the scene repeated itself recently in Arizona, as the lead singer from Aspen, who now performs as Kirsten Sings Jazz at East Valley venues, again was observed by Terry, who has been a professional hair colorist/stylist in Scottsdale for the past six years.

Kirsten was singing at Carefree Station Restaurant when Terry and some friends stopped in to enjoy the open patio.  Not immediately recognizing Kirsten after so many years, Terry loved the music style and sound of Kirsten’s voice, but as a cosmetologist, she again thought a change in the singer’s appearance might add to her appeal.

After a few more songs that evening, Kirsten mentioned that she had several CD’s available, including one recorded earlier which Terry recognized as being in her home music collection.  Terry asked her if she was from Sioux City, Iowa, and Kirsten immediately remembered Terry and the makeover she had arranged back in 1981.

During later conversations, it was suggested that a makeover take place again, this time in Scottsdale’s Salon Michele Rene, where Terry regularly performs makeovers for women who want to portray their best professional and personal image.

Dr. Pam Martin is the President/Founding Executive Director of Homeward Bound. Founded in 1990, Homeward Bound has been assisting homeless and domestic violence families with children as they transition from homelessness to economic independence. Salon Michele Rene with Terry Dykshorn's coordination has been rewarding women that are working the program with salon makeovers. When Pam saw that her families were not only transformed physically by the changes, but also transformed emotionally, she decided maybe it was time to have a makeover herself.

Although her long hair pulled back into a simple bun was easy and quick, Pam realized the style was not exactly becoming. After consultation, Terry cut Pam's hair into a short style that she knew she would be comfortable with, and Pam could blow-dry herself. A flattering color was chosen to go with her skin tone and highlights ease the color change and break it up to make it look fuller.

This attractive style is is befitting her high profile position. Pam regains a more youthful appearance, and her husband and friends love the new look.

Terry is doing a retouch color and cut service for Georgina, a regular client. Starting with a base touch-up, then adding a few highlights simultaneously, speeds the process. The highlights definitely draw the eye to her already striking features. Her hair cut is personally designed for her and highly textured using the razor. Georgina is able to style it herself between visits with minimal finger styling and a blow dryer.
